People Management and Leadership is a huge responsibility and it’s rarely easy, at least not to start with, yet often its one we acquire without having had any training or real understanding of how to do it and what’s involved. This is especially so if you work in a smaller or growing company, or have always worked for yourself and suddenly find yourself with people underneath you, relying on you, looking up to you, critiquing you.

And so, in the absence of anything else, we bumble along, making it up as we go, using our intuition, a few management articles online and thinking of those good and bad bosses we’ve had in the past as a reference manual for what we should or shouldn’t do.

Making it up as we go and learning on the job works to an extent but it can be slow and painful. Both for you and for the people you manage. While you’re finding your feed productivity, efficiency and motivation can slide and turnover and holding on to talent can become problematic.

So doesn’t it make sense to speed up the process and save yourself (and them) some of the knocks along the way?
